Going through the process of finding employment is basically a full-time job in of itself. However, it doesn’t end there. What if you get a call back? What if they want you to come in interview you for the position? What do you do? How do you dress? What do you bring? There are a lot of questions to be answered.
In today’s work culture, many businesses have a casual work environment where a relaxed attire is allowed. Jeans and t-shirts are sometimes an acceptable dress code. However, many other places require uniformity and you’ll have to wear the same color day in and day out and match your coworkers. Or you could be working in an environment where a shirt and tie for men and dressier attire for women (i.e. banks) are enforced. In places like that, if you don’t dress for the part you won’t get the job you ultimately desire.
So, how do you prepare for an interview when there are so many different work environments? Simple. Dress to impress. It’s better to overdress and look professional than come into an interview and look like you just rolled out of bed and picked the first thing you found on the floor. If you get the job and everybody is wearing jeans, you’ll have plenty of time to wear jeans later. If you are wearing jeans and everybody else in the interview is in a more professional attire you’ll probably not get the job. First impressions are everything.
Not only do you need to dress nicely but act and speak professionally as well. Again, work cultures differ from each place of employment but a good rule of advice is to keep it simple and professional in the interview. Stick with the questions at hand and don’t make friends with the person giving you the interview. They are not there to find a buddy but someone who would be adequate at completing the job at hand. Give the interviewer your full attention and look them in the eyes whenever they ask you a question and when you answer. Also, in today’s age of technology, try not to carry your phone with you when you go in to interview. If you need to bring it with you, make sure it is silent or off during the entire process.
What do you need to bring? Not much. Bring a couple extra copies of your resume just in case. If the interviewer doesn’t need them, at least you will have them to look back on and reference if need be. Also, bring a list of questions, but no more than four or five, to ask at the end of the interview. A few good questions to ask would be to see if they think you would be a good fit for the company, how the company operates and its specific culture, and how the interviewer themselves enjoy working for the company. These questions would give you an insight of how well you stack up and a little bit of insider information on the company itself.
